iPhone 5 Prototype Lost in Bar: Apple watching small ads

Most of us will remember the iPhone 4 prototype being lost in a bar last year, and then appearing on a website for the entire world to see after a cash exchange had taken place. Now fast forward to this year we have news that an iPhone 5 prototype has been lost in a bar, and will mean Apple we be watching the small ads and auction sites for the device.

Cnet are reporting that another prototype has again been lost in a bar in San Francisco’s Mission area towards the end of July. The loss led to Apple security rushing to recover the device over the following days.

The situation mirrors that of last year when a website paid $5,000 in cash for the lost iPhone 4 prototype and was then shown off to the world. This year the prototype was mislaid in a Mexican restaurant and bar, and is thought to have maybe been sold on Craigslist for $200. It is not known what the device looks like or what software it was running.

The iPhone is believed to be launching in the coming weeks with a reveal thought to be coming this month, and a release in October. So far Apple and Craigslist have refused to comment on the news. A couple of days after the device was lost a team from Apple contacted the San Francisco police, and said the device was priceless and were desperate to retrieve it according to sources.

It is alleged that Apple traced the device electronically to a family home in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood, and when police and Apple staff visited the property found a man in his twenties. He confirmed he was at the bar on the night in question but said he had no knowledge of the iPhone, he allowed a search of the house that found nothing.

Before leaving Apple staff are alleged to have offered the man money to return the device with no questions asked, but he again said he knew nothing of it. If the news about the loss is true it will be embarrassing for Apple, and we have to wait to see if it appears on the web anytime soon.
