iPhone 5 LTE almost a certainty due to Verizon requirements

Since the iPhone 4S was released we have seen a steady increase in the speculation about the next version of Apple’s flagship handset. Many reports have suggested the device will be a total redesign compared to the current model. Now it seems that an iPhone 5 with LTE compatibility is almost a certainty due to Verizon requirements for future smartphones.

According to a report on Cnet, Verizon wants all future handsets released on the carrier’s network to support 4G LTE technology. When the iPhone was first released in the US AT&T had exclusive access to the iPhone, but since Verizon managed to get hold of it they have seen massive sales of the device. So surely there is no way the carrier would set these requirements without the knowledge of such a device coming from Apple this year.

It has been reported before that Apple wasn’t going to release an all new iPhone until LTE technology had progressed enough to fit into Apple’s requirements. The next generation of LTE chip sets should be available in the next few months, which are smaller than current units but are also less demanding with regards to power.

Verizon are also planning on supporting the Windows Phone platform in the future as well according to Keith Lampron, Verizon’s associate director of device marketing. Verizon has been steaming ahead of the competition with LTE, buying up spectrum and releasing some great smartphones. The carrier is also confident to have completed its LTE network by the end of next year.

AT&T and Sprint are also pushing their own LTE networks that will turn the heat up on Verizon as it expands its network. If Apple does release a LTE iPhone 5 sometime this year, there will be even more consumers clambering to get hold of the handset.

Are you hoping for a LTE iPhone 5 this year?
