iPhone 4S: dual antennas for increased data speed

The newly announced iPhone 4S both surprised and disappointed us, but overall the reaction has been positive — well on my part anyway. The current design is not an ugly one, so it will not be too upsetting to walk around with a device that looks like something that was brought out over a year ago. Things are very different under the surface, and one change that we should notice right away is the dual antennas for increased data speed.

Apple has done a lot of work with the new hardware, so much so that this is the first smartphone to be able to switch from one antenna to another when transmitting and receiving data. Not only is there that increase in data speeds, but also call quality will be vastly improved. The biggest achievement is how the maximum HSDPA data speed goes from 7.2Mbps to 14.4 Mbps.

Now Apple did not want to get into figures of how this compares to what constitutes LTE speeds, but they did say that it the iPhone 4S would now be able to keep up with 4G handsets when it comes to data connections. This will be very important when iCloud is launched, as it will mean that downloads will be much faster. This will be needed when performing an OTA for when iOS 5 starts to receive updates.

The antenna is vastly improved when compared to the current model, but it is not a revolution, more an evolution, much like the 4S then. The only issue that we see with this new antenna design is the fact that American carriers will not be able to offer speeds of 14.4 Mbps., as they do not support it like foreign networks do.

This is further proof that Apple is not keeping their eye on the ball, and that they should have released an LTE version for the American market.
