iPhone 4G / 5G and iPad: Apple buys chip companies

It is no secret that Apple wants to have the fastest chip in its iPhone and iPad, which is why they have purchased another chipmaker. Apple hopes that by buying Intrinsity, they will gain an edge over its competitors. This Austin, Texas based company is known for supplying chips in a number of mobile devices.

Apple confirmed the deal yesterday that took place last month — it certainly shows that Apple is in this for the long haul. This is the second chip company that Apple has purchased in two years — their plan is to offer a faster processor while using much less power.

According to a report from the NYTimes, Apple purchased Intrinsity for $121 million, although either party has not confirmed this figure. The A4 chip in the iPad is both powerful and energy efficient, so came as no surprise that Apple wanted a better chip for its iPhone.

Apple will not have enough time to take advantage of this new chip technology for the iPhone 4G, but we could expect to see something for the iPhone 5G in 2011. The new iPhone 4G is said to have a 16 percent larger battery to offer more life, but if Apple can utilize the chip technology from Intrinsity, then we could see smaller batteries thanks to more energy-efficient chips.
