iPad 2 Sales: Unfamiliar Buyers

The iPad 2 which went on sale last Friday looks set to be a massive success, far out stripping what the original iPad saw when it was first launched. If some research is anything to go by the new iPad is attracting many new users.

Neil Hughes from AppleInsider is reporting that analyst Gene Munster asked 236 people who were lining up for the iPad 2, and over two-thirds were new to the iPad. It has been found before with launches, that they are usually driven by people upgrading.

The release of the iPhone 4 saw only 23 percent of buyers who were new the iPhone platform. It was also found that 47 percent were looking to buy a 3G iPad 2, with 41 percent opting for the 32GB version. This is compared with 32 percent getting the 32GB version of the original iPad.

Of those people who were asked 65 percent had an iPhone and 24 percent also owned a Kindle. Only 6 percent were intending to use their iPad 2 for reading, while 17 percent were going to use it for apps and games.

The iPad is certainly attracting big interest among consumers, as Apple look to build on the success of the original tablet will they keep up with demand?
