Importance of 3D on Xbox 720 and PS4

There are a lot of gamers expecting the release date for the Xbox 720 and PS4 to be revealed within the next year or two, and there are also those that have a few ideas for features that they may want or not want in the next-generation.

Some developers expect that the PlayStation 4, and also Microsoft’s next gen system, to be the first generation that truly enables 3D. Most gamers have not jumped into the 3D gaming age yet, although reports from the UK explain why that might be, with most people thinking it’s just a gimmick.

Emails we’ve received from our readers both support and discourage the idea of 3D for the next-gen gaming system, with some opinions pointing to the idea that a “3d centric” system would be a really bad idea, although others would love 3D as a standard option on most or all games, which doesn’t sound that bad at all.

If Sony and Microsoft do improve the PS4 and Xbox 720 to include much better 3D, but also leave it as an option that is not pushed upon the gamer, then it may work. Anything that is forced upon you and becomes a main part of the system may hit a rebellion.

One developer has gone much further when it comes to expectations of release dates, and states that the age of Xbox 360 and PS3 is “a lot in computer years”, explaining that the next generation is now and that “The Witness” puzzle game is unlikely to release on this generation.

How important is 3D to you for the Xbox 720 and PS4? Would you rather something a lot more immersive like virtual reality, although not centric and only as an optional feature?
