Just moments after we informed you that Square-Enix may be planning to bring a Final Fantasy title to the Nintendo Wii U, we have news on the other side of the spectrum now, as Ubisoft has stated in a recent interview that they don’t believe the graphics on the new console are truly ‘next gen’.
This interesting admission was made in a recent interview with Videogamer, in which Rayman creator Michael Ancel instead prefers to call the Nintendo Wii U controller ‘next-gen’ rather than the console and presumably the graphics as well.
When asked a direct question whether the Wii U was next-gen or not, here is what he replied:
”Not really. I think Wii U is next-gen in terms of interface.”
Are you a bit surprised about his comments, because they are certainly going to spark debate amongst the gaming industry. The Nintendo Wii U has come six years after the original Wii debuted, and if the console cannot be labeled as next-gen in that period of time, then Nintendo may have a big problem on their hands. Of course, they will be adamant themselves that the Wii U is a ‘next-gen’ console, but if word quickly spreads round that it’s not, it’s going to create a negative perception in gamer’s minds and that can only hurt Nintendo in terms of hardware sales.
Nintendo has probably realised now that they made a huge mistake at E3 by not showing off the console at the event, more specifically the exact technical capabilities that the system can handle. Instead they preferred to demonstrate the touchscreen controller for the majority of the event, and it left gamer’s with a somewhat sour taste in the mouth.
Has Ubisoft just confirmed gamer’s fears that the Wii U isn’t going to cut the mustard in future console battles with the Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox successor? It’s probably too early to tell, especially since Nintendo has yet to show off some proper footage of Wii U gameplay. This latest admission from Ubisoft hasn’t exactly come at a good time for Nintendo though, especially with gamers still skeptical.
Do you believe that the Nintendo Wii U is truly ‘next-gen’ or not?
