Hundreds of complaints on iOS 5 WiFi signal problems emerge

Here’s something that Apple won’t enjoy reading but very rarely do the official support boards at Apple tell lies. After informing you about battery life problems and a case of invalid SIM error messages for some users, there now appears to be a problem regarding WiFi signal quality on iOS 5.

Another lengthy debate has been brewing on the Apple boards for well over a month now, and seems to have gone unnoticed amidst the other iOS-related problems that we mentioned above.

If you take a look at this thread though over at the Apple boards, you’ll see that complaints are still flying in today about WiFi-related problems on iOS 5, despite the thread being created on October 13th. After more than 230 replies from disgruntled users, it has become apparent that there may be another serious problem that Apple has to deal with in their next software update. Considering that replies are still coming in today, it does suggest that Apple’s recent iOS 5.0.1 update does not solve the problem either.

Devices affected by the WiFi problem include the iPhone 4, the new 4S, the iPad, iPad 2, the iPhone 3GS and also the iPod Touch as well, as noted by Engadget. It has been detailed that in some cases, iOS devices fail to connect to a WiFi network, often giving an ‘unable to connect’ message despite the fact that the WiFi network is working fine on other devices.

Here’s one example taken from the Apple support thread, posted just yesterday (November 21st):

”I am having wi-fi connection problems on my iPhone 4 & iPad 2 since upgrading to iOS 5. My devices see networks but sometimes take a very long time to connect. And then, once connected, it can take a while to actually be able to send & receive data. It’s very frustrating. I never had these problems prior to the iOS 5 upgrade. Apple, please help.”

After so much hype and promise about iOS 5, it looks like Apple’s biggest software update to date is causing users a lot of headaches. The company has yet to fully sort out battery life issues, and these ‘new found’ WiFi signal problems are likely to go away anytime soon.

If you have experienced similar problems to the ones mentioned above, get in touch with us. What device are you using and what iOS version do you have running? Are the problems frequent or do they just occur sporadically?

I have an iphone 4s with iOS 5.0.1.
Before upgrading to the new OS, the outdoor wifi drops.
After upgrading to the new OS, cannot connect to certain outdoor wifi. (home, and a strong signal outdoor wifi 3 bars)

I might go to the apple store and see. I’ve also heard that it might be a hardware problem.

sooooo frustrating

I just upgrade to IOS5 a couple days ago.  I didn’t notice WIFI connectivity issues until today.  The iphone4 can see the networks, but cannot connect.  Very frustrating.  When is Apple going to do something about this?  I had no trouble previously with ios4!   We need to channel Steve!

We are having the same problem as everyone else, as well as a few more. Our devices are iphone4 (2), iPod touch (2), ipad2. Surprisingly, no wifi problems on ipad2, although download a little slow at times. All connectivity wifi issues are with the iPhones and iPod touches. We get intermittent wifi connectivity. Sometimes they connect as usual, but sometimes they won’t connect even though they see the network. We just upgraded the last device (an ipod touch) over the weekend and now have the wifi issue on it. In addition, we are having problems getting the entire music library… Read more »

I cannot connect to any Wifi network, enter the password and it says “unable to join network”. I have Wifi at work and at home, but only the last couple of days has it become a problem connecting. Why I do not know, I have just tried to update my phone again but with no success. My Mrs has a 3Gs, but she has no problems. Please Apple provide me a solution for what is normally an amazing product!!

I’m having the same wi-fi problem as everyone else. I’ve got a 3Gs that worked perfectly until i upgraded it to iOS 5 (5.0.1did’t help).
Another problem that occured at the same time was that the GPS stopped working. There seems to be quite a few people experiencing the same problem. At best it places me in the same town, wrong location or like now about 50 km off! Really annoying

intermittent wifi connectivity since ios5.  i had hopes for ios5.0.1, but that only added faster battery discharge.  The wifi problem is very frustrating.  It makes the iDevice into only a Device.  I used to think about buying an iPad, but now there is no way i would do that.  And then i got an iPad email ad this morning.  Hey, how about you make my phone work again first!

i experienced the wifi problems as soon as i updated my iPhone 3GS to iOS5 about 4 weeks ago
desperately waiting for an update fixing it!
for me it’s a huge isue that apple won’t even recognize!! what a pity!!
a bunch of jerks if you want my opinion!
& no way to go back to 4.3.5 which i was satisfied with, amazing!!
and they want us to believe its a hardware issue??

I need to be about 5 feet away from my wifi hub to get 4 bars on my iPad 2. I used to be able to use it anywhere in the house.

I’m having the same problem. Upgraded to ios5 on my iPad 2 and now the wifi shows on,y 2 bars and takes forever. I’m right by my router too. My daughters ipad2 on the old iOS version side by side works fine. It’s the software.

forget apple products, they cannot work without steve jobs. he is not coming back, they will soon be bankrupt like the last time when jobs left and they had to beg microsoft for 100 million dollars. this time jobs is gone for good. so is apple rip.

I have am having a wifi issue. I have a 3Gs and I updated just the other day. Now my wifi signal drops or can’t be connected to at all. The personal hot spot tries to connect/ set up with no reason. And if it starts searching for the hotspot or the wifi there is almost nothing that will stop it searching outside of resetting ALL settings. Resetting network does nothing. This constant searching also cause me to lose a call signal as well. Not happy.
