HTC suffers setback in patent conflict with Apple

Apple has found itself at the center of several ongoing legal battles concerning patents recently, with a number of manufacturers including Samsung and HTC. It seems that the Taiwanese based company has suffered a setback in their conflict however, as the International Trade Commission has dismissed its claim that Apple infringed patents.

HTC were claiming that Apple’s devices violated four patents in total, one of which was the ability to carry out essential tasks like dialing a phone number. An initial determination from the ITC ruled that Apple does not actually infringe on any of the four patents in question. HTC were not satisfied and told Wall Street Journal they would rather wait for an official copy of the ruling before discussing it and their future plans.

General Counsel of HTC, Grace Lei stated ‘This is only one step of many in these legal proceedings,’ and insisted the company has ‘a strong case for the ITC appeals process.’ Analysts believe it is the later rulings, which are expected in November and December, which will have more significant effect. This ruling adds to the continued success Apple is having with its current disputes, including the early victories against Samsung.

On December 6th the ITC is due to issue the last ruling on a current case which Apple has filed against HTC, which also initially ruled in favor of Apple, who were claiming HTC had infringed on two of their patents. Analysts believe Apple intend to block HTC smartphones from the market, as they are the most used Android devices in the U.S, while HTC are hoping to counter. Whatever the outcome, we won’t get to see its effects for over a year anyway.
