HTC EVO 4G Release Date and Price Confirmed

We have been talking about the HTC EVO 4G since CTIA Wireless 2010 in March, but what we did not know was its release date and price. However, that has all changed as Sprint has confirmed via a press release that the first full 4G handset will be released on June 4 and will cost $199 when you sign up to a contract.

Engadget picks up on the fact that Sprint makes a point of announcing that you can video chat on the HTC EVO 4G thanks to its front-facing camera — something that we hope to see on the rumored iPhone 4G. The new Android OS based smartphone will run either 3G or 4G and will use a new piece of software to handle that task.

However, we have to point out that you will have to pay extra for the privilege of 4G – $10 per month on top of your normal plan. We feel confident that the extra charge for the faster WIMAX service will be more than worth it. We did think that Sprint was not going to offer simultaneous voice and data, but it looks as though they have worked things out with HTC and will offer it from day one of release.

The HTC EVO 4G will come with Google Android 2.1 OS straight out of the box, but we expect an upgrade to Android 2.2 once the operating system has proved itself on the Nexus One first. There are those who would like to know why the newer version of Android is not installed onto newer Android handsets first? The simple answer is that these HTC smartphones run a custom UI interface, as a result will be much harder to implement than on the Nexus One, which is a Google branded handset.
