HTC Desire: Orange UK FroYo Release Date Update

Last week we revealed that Android 2.2 was on its way to European HTC Desires, this was great news considering many were expecting a Christmas release, however was frustrating for others as carrier-specific Desires would not receive the update straight away.

Recently Orange UK’s PR Manager Conor Maples tweeted about Orange’s FroYo plans for their Desire, here is his tweet “We are working with HTC to bring the 2.2 Android update to Desire customers as soon as we can. This process normally takes about four weeks”.

This means that we should definitely see the update in August, however I wouldn’t be surprised if this update arrives in very late August, either way at least we know there is not a huge time to wait.

There are probably ways around this by installing a non-carrier specific version of FroYo on your Desire, however I would not recommend this as it could cause more problems than it is worth.

Easiest way to get the update on an Orange handset is to unlock the phone them borrow mates sim to find the update. If you put your orange sim back in it will update on the Orange network.

Canon,

I’ve unlocked my Orange HTC Desire from the network and I was thinking of doing what you’ve done.

Where did you download the relevant files and which step by step did you follow?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I rooted my Orange UK HTC Desire, then installed the latest Desire update and radio. It was very easy – there are step by step guides all over the internet. All I needed was a sim unlock code off EBay.

Now my phone gets much better reception and is far more stable. And I can watch all flash videos online. Plus I have support for future releases of Android and can avoid all the Orange bloatware that comes with their versions of Android. Orange will most likely never release another update after 2.2
