HTC Desire Android update draws closer following Facebook post

June has been a busy month for HTC regarding its original Desire handset. The company much to the dismay of owners originally said they would not be bringing the Android Gingerbread update to the Desire. Then shortly after did an about turn and say it will be coming but with some alterations to make it fit the handset. Now we have news that the HTC Desire Android update is drawing closer following a Facebook post by HTC on its page.

What will please many Desire owners is the news that the company is now testing their build of the operating system for the handset. They went on to say it “will start doing quality assurance for it this week”. There was no ETA of the actual update going live but this must be in the coming weeks now.

But as is the case with Android updates once it is available the roll out of it can depend on the carriers pushing it out to their customers. This has been a major criticism of the Android platform with the staggered release of updates to various handsets.

Google has recently begun looking at ways into resolving the issue by teaming up with the various handset manufacturers in the hope of getting updates pushed out sooner. Owners of the Desire’s bigger brother the Desire HD have had a similar issue getting the Gingerbread update. Many have had access to it for a while now, with some customers only just getting to download it.

This sort of problem does seem to affect many handsets as we recently told you that the Motorola Droid 2 Global would have to wait an unspecified length of time to get the Gingerbread update. Now in an update to this story Chris Smith of TFTS is reporting of rumors that the update was rejected by Verizon due to some bugs in it.

Hopefully this is one issue that Google can iron out of the Android platform as it moves forward and continues to do battle with Apple in the smartphone market. HTC have promised to update Desire owners again soon with news of the Android Gingerbread update, and you can find their Facebook page here.

Are you frustrated with the way Android OS updates are rolled out to customers?
