With CES 2012 looming we are intrigued as to which products will attract the most attention, last year lots of 4G smartphones, Android tablets and 3DTVs stole the show, however a lot has changed in a year and we can’t wait to see what the World’s largest and most intuitive electronic product manufacturers have up their sleeves – today we will talk about 5 technology advances which PCWorld.com think will be hot this year.
Firstly let’s talk about Organic Light Emitting Diode displays aka OLED. OLED displays have been seen in lots of smartphones and tablets lately, however we have not seen any affordable monitors or TVs, could this be the year things change? We have already heard that LG will be showing off a 55-inch OLED display, but this won’t be affordable, maybe Samsung’s CES 2012 plans will also consist of some reasonably priced OLED displays.
Whilst we are talking about HDTVs we will talk about 4K, this is a technology which allows display resolutions which are four times as dense as 1080p, with smartphones already boasting 720p displays we think it is about time that home HDTVs start advancing to new high-definition standards and 4K certainly is a great jump in our opinion.
We first got a taster of Ice Cream Sandwich back in November last year, now plenty of devices have received an update to ICS, but we haven’t seen a great deal of devices specifically designed for this new Android version, we expect to see lots of Android devices at the show all running Ice Cream Sandwich, there will be less physical buttons than ever before as ICS doesn’t require the physical ‘Android buttons’ which we have seen of late – also we presume that plenty of manufacturers will announce more details regarding updates to ICS for existing devices.
Something which will tie in with Android Ice Cream Sandwich is quad-core technology, to date we have not seen any quad-core smartphones hit the market, but now that dual-core processors in smartphones are becoming the norm we are sure that smartphone manufacturers will be keen to unveil more powerful smartphones with quad-core chips.
Finally we will quickly mention Ultrabooks, for the last year or so we have seen MacBook Air competitors hit the market, however advances in microprocessor technology will now allow for thinner designs and longer battery life, therefore it seems likely that new Ivy Bridge-based devices will make a debut hopefully boasting solid-state-disks which don’t cost ridiculous amounts – perhaps we will get to see Windows 8 running on some of these Ultrabooks, that would certainly give us a taster as to what to expect in the future.
So there you have it folks, devices which fall into the OLED, 4K, Ice Cream Sandwich, quad-core smartphone and Ultrabook categories are what we think will be hot this year at CES 2012, perhaps we have missed something – if so let us know in the comments section below.
