Hitachi GST has recently announced two new hard drive families which are aimed to deliver high reliability, quiet acoustics and low power consumption, one of which has a 2.5-inch form-factor, whilst the other has a 3.5-inch form-factor.
The 2.5-inch CinemaStar C5K750 will be available in three different capacities, 500GB, 640GB and 750GB, these drives generate just 2.3 idle bels and consume just 1.5W of power during read/write operations.
As for the 3.5-inch CinemaStar 5K2000 variants you can choose either 1.5TB or 2TB of storage, these drives produce just 2.4 bels during operation, also they generate a low amount of heat and draw just 4.2W or less idle power.
If you check out Engadget’s recent article you can see the full Hitachi GST press release, it seems as if the new CinemaStar drives have all the attributes to make them the perfect choice for your DVR or home cinema PC. If you want to get hold of one of these new drives they are said to be shipping to customers worldwide.
The great thing about these drives is that they will undoubtedly offer a cheaper alternative to solid-state disks, SSDs undoubtedly have the edge in terms of noise output, power consumption and running temperature, however the CinemaStar drives offer a huge amount of storage in comparison and are almost comparable in terms of power consumption, running temperature and noise output.
