Half of UK on Android: Cheap iPhone 4S/5 is the answer

There have been a continual pattern over the past year or so, and that is how Android has been able to increase its stranglehold in the OS market. The only rival with an answer is Apple and its iOS platform, as they have an opportunity to overtake them. Almost half of the UK are on Android, so what could Apple do to combat this; the answer is a cheap iPhone 4S/5.

In a recent study we can see that back in June 2011 Android only had a 10.7 share of the UK market, and just 12 months later that has increased to 45.2 percent. This is all thanks to a relentless bombardment from the likes of HTC, Motorola and Samsung, who have given us some truly amazing handsets — just imagine how much that growth will be once the Samsung Galaxy S II gets its US release?

Metro has been studying Kantar Worldpanel’s research, and found that the iPhone has seen a decrease in market share. In the same period mentioned above Apple’s handset has gone from 30.6 percent to 18.3 percent. Now there is no need to panic right away, as we need to have a look at the facts.

iPhone 4 sales have set records for not only Apple but any other company for a single handset, and the reason why they have seen their market share drop is due to the fact that there are now a greater choice of Android phones. There lies the problem; Apple only has a high-end smartphone, whereas Android has phones that suit all budgets.

Apple is not stupid and knows that they are unable to steal Android customers, as they are loyal to the platform, as iPhone users as well. Apple needs to stop this hemorrhage, and the only way they can do this is buy offering a cheaper version of their handset.

It is all well and good shaving a few dollars off the new iPhone, but they still need to have a cheaper version for those who cannot afford the price of the high-end model. We have seen signs that this could happen, as Apple executives have been seen in China.

If they were ever to start increasing their smartphone market share once again, then they need to conquer these growing markets, with China and India being just two of them. The biggest casualty in all this is RIM, we have a breakdown of their sales here, and it does not paint a pretty picture.
