Marvelous Entertainment’s Half-Minute Hero game became quite popular when it was first released on the Sony PlayStation Portable back in 2009. In fact, the action RPG / shoot-em-up / real-time strategy hybrid game went on to receive several awards from RPG-related websites including PSP RPG of the Year 2009 (RPGFan.com), Best PSP RPG (RPGamer.com) and PSP Game of the Year (RPGLand.com).
The much-awaited Xbox Live Arcade version — titled Half-Minute Hero Super Mega Neo Climax — was launched yesterday (June 29th) and judging by the impressive review scores it’s been receiving, it looks as though it could be heading in the same direction. For example, Andrew Stevens over on the sestren.org website gave the game an overall score of 7/10, and described it as an interesting experience.
What adds to the game’s replay value in Andrew’s opinion is the fact that once a player has worked out an area (there are a total of 31 areas in the main hero quest), they have the ability to play it again to try and beat their times. The hardest part of the game however is getting a good time. Andrew says that although the story and gameplay are simple, the Half-Minute Hero game is slightly addictive.
Another point Andrew makes is that although the music is good, it can get a little repetitive. Meanwhile, Chad Goodmurphy from wegotthiscovered.com gave the game an impressive score of 4/5. The best part of the game according to Chad is the competitive hero vs. hero multiplayer mode, which allows up to four heroes to attempt to become the very first to slay the fiend.
What makes the multiplayer mode more fun is the fact that players can piggyback another player’s attempt at defeating the boss. In other words, the previous hero’s damage will count when you take your turn to defeat the boss. Andrew Peggs from sfx-360.com was another reviewer that was quite impressed with the Half-Minute Hero Super Mega Neo Climax game, giving it an overall score of 9.6/10.
According to this reviewer, the game offers great graphics, good music, major replay value and a crazy multiplayer mode. Gage from theplayvault.com on the other hand gave the game a perfect score of 10/10, describing it as an innovative adventure that will take you on an experience unlike ever before. Gage says that the music is entertaining, and the game is fast-paced and addictive.
