Growing pains for Google+: Needs Gaga or Bieber

Google+ is new to the social media world, so as such will be suffering from growing pains. The issue is that the new service has undergone a growth spurt in a short amount of time, and as such will need to keep offering something unique and exciting in order to keep people signing up. We have already discussed how Google needs to make their new Plus project public, but what it really needs in a celebrity injection.

We already know that the likes of Alyssa Milano and Ashton Kutcher are already using Google+, but what about the big hitters like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber? Kutcher was once the king of twitter, but not anymore. Could you imagine what would happen if the likes of Gaga or Bieber stopped tweeting and +1 things instead — the publicity would be huge?

OK, so we are never likely to see this, but they and other top celebrities need to start backing Google+, as this is a sure way to show that the search engine behemoth is in it for the long haul. Some people have already started to right off Google+, but the new service is just finding its way before it stretches its legs.

The new social network is not perfect, as having to use your real name could be a deal breaker to some. Google do not want to go down the Twitter route with strange parody account names, and who can blame them, as there are so many questionable ones. This is just one minor hiccup, and if a user likes what they see, then this will not put them off signing up — once it comes out of private beta that is.

TNW has been looking into how Google+ users have been reacting more than users do on Twitter, with reports suggesting that interaction has been four times that of Twitter. One reason for this is how you are not limited to just 140 characters; instead you can add a little description to try to capture your audience. Trying to do this with a limited amount of characters is tough, but not impossible.

So many people have been comparing Google+ to Facebook, but to some it is more like Twitter — well a bulked up version. Facebook is now a way of life to the 750 million or so users, so we cannot see the service being dethroned anytime soon. However, the micro-blogging site is another subject, as it has its limits, something that Google will be able to take advantage of.
