Grease and Sing Along Movies: Social Media Marketing

Some moviegoers may feel the 3D movie hype is just that, a way to sell more movies with no long-term success possible, but then it seems to be working for young children.

Sadly North America may be having problems increasing attendance to the latest movies, in fact The New York Times is reporting attendance has fallen 3 percent. Now the marketers have turned from 3D to “Sing Along Movies”.

Meet “Grease Sing Along”, one of the latest ideas from those in power. This is a rerelease of John Travolta’s 1978 musical, with one aim, to pull young people from the small screen, to the big screen.

Teens love social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. But the movie marketers are trying to get this group going to the movies more, so they want to create a “true event”.

It’s all about Social Media Marketing. Movie marketers are in the Twitter age, and as BROOKS BARNES from NYT points out, they have found out that its possible to convince the younger crowd that going to the movies can be a “Party”. They do this with social media and promotional events.

Disney did this with “Alice in Wonderland”, last year they asked MySpace to stream live video from a Los Angeles mall, and told visitors to dress in an “Alice costume”. Great use of viral marketing, the web, and social media. The place you will find the “younger generation”.
