Google Instant Search: 3 Tips / Tricks

Today Google updated their popular search engine, this update is being dubbed Google Instant search, you can find out more about it here.

We thought that you would appreciate a few search tips, these should help you find exactly what it is you want to find. These tips are not new to Google, however useful for the less knowledgeable computer users out there.

Let’s start with perhaps the most commonly used Google search trick, if you want to find an exact term when searching Google simple use speech/quotations marks around the words you are searching for. Here is an example, this search returns roughly 47 million results, without the quotation marks it returns roughly 130 million results. Obviously on longer searches it becomes more and more accurate therefore if we search for “happy birthday to you” (here) it narrows the results down even further.

Another neat trick allows you to only see search results which contain a certain word, for example if you wanted to search for the lyrics for happy birthday to you, it is easy, simple continue searching for “happy birthday to you” but add +lyrics at the end. This will now only display search results for sites which contain the string “happy birthday to you” with the word ‘lyrics’ in the content. You can see how this narrows down your search results here.

You can also do the opposite of the previous trick by using the minus sign, if you want to view search results which didn’t contain the word ‘lyrics’ simply search “happy birthday to you” -lyrics (here), this should show websites containing the text “happy birthday to you” as long as it doesn’t contain the word ‘lyrics’.
