Google Glass has no mass appeal says Tim Cook

Just days before WWDC 2013 is set to commence, Apple CEO Tim Cook has taken the time to grace All Things Digital’s D11 event. During his interview, he was asked for his opinions on Google’s upcoming Glass product. In response, Cook has said that while he is a fan of wearable technology, he doesn’t believe that Google Glass has mass appeal.

It’s no secret that Apple are heavily expected to debut their own wearable product, in the form of a wrist smartwatch that will come with iOS 7 integration before the end of 2013. As a result, it means that Google Glass will likely become a main competitor to their unannounced project, so it’s perhaps unsurprising to see Tim Cook offer a rather subdued opinion on a rival product.

When specifically asked about Google Glass, Cook said that there are some “positives in the product”. He adds that Google Glass will probably “appeal to certain vertical markets”, but on the likelihood of Glass appealing to a broad audience, he said it was “tough to see”.

He also refused to answer a direct question on whether Apple were building a wearable product, but did rather stealthily reveal that he thinks the “wrist is interesting”, thanks to a more “natural” form factor. Do you agree with his statement though on Google Glass having no mass appeal? The product is expected to be fully released later on in the year, with developers already having access to prototype sets now thanks to Google’s Explorer incentive. With such a bold statement like that, it will be interesting to see Apple trying to convince the world that their own iWatch is the product to own at the end of 2013.
