The mobile market is getting bigger and more competitive, but this has seen various companies suing each other with claims and counter claims of technology being copied. Now today we have news that Google cobbles up Motorola in a deal which is seen as a move to prevent future patent disputes.
In what has come as a surprise, Google have announced today it is buying Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. The deal will still see Motorola run as a separate business and according to Electronista will keep Android relatively open. The two companies described the deal as mutual, and if it gets the go ahead should clear by the end of this year or early 2012.
Google have suggested that the move was more to defend itself against future patent attacks, and less as a way to get control of Motorola’s hardware range. This deal will allow Google to have control of Motorola’s patents, and also gives the Android world a bit of a shake up.
Google’s CEO Larry Page said “Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies”.
Motorola have previously commented on the strength of its patents, and other Android companies might get targeted as the company tried to drop the prices of its cell phones. This deal may also see the end of Motorola’s much criticized changes to the Android operating system it uses on its cell phones.
While the acquisition is set to see Motorola being run as a separate company, it could be used as the official showcase for Android. Motorola has come under a lot of criticism recently with the much publicized delay with the release of the Motorola Droid Bionic. If the take-over is approved it will further strengthen Google’s grip on the smartphone market as it goes up against its biggest rival Apple.
But what it will mean for the likes of the Windows Mobile platform and BlackBerry remains to be seen, and not to mention the beleaguered Nokia. Do you think Google buying Motorola makes good business sense?
