GM: 1000 Engineers For Chevy Volt and Next-Gen EVs

With GM fully focused on the Chevy Volt, it has come as no surprise that both General Motors and Chrysler are to take on 1,000 engineers and researchers. They will not only be used for the new electric vehicle, but for next-gen EVs as well. This shows how well GM has done over the past year, so 2011 is looking good for the Detroit automaker.

Hiring is to start now and will be a process over the next two years, which should be perfect for when the Chevy Volt is fully in its stride with sales and customer awareness. Chrysler is to start taking on more staff in the coming months, as they aim to increase the size of their business.

The auto industry has been in a bad way for some time, so is nice to see that things have now started to pick up. Both GM and Chrysler were in bankruptcy last year, but it is the former who has turned its business around, the latter has finally managed to slow its loses.

GM has a lot riding on the Chevrolet Volt, and needs it to be successful, especially as they are selling it at “close to cost.” That’s according to their CEO Dan Akerson, which ABC News reported yesterday. Production for the Volt has now begun, which we will will discuss in a later post. There has been much speculation over the cars, is it an EV or is it an Hybrid? One thing we do know, its biggest rival will be the Nissan Leaf.

Do you think that GM is onto a winner with the Chevy Volt?
