Kickstarter is turning out to be an amazing tool for new investments that really help lesser known companies get their products out to market quickly. We’ve seen it work with the Ouya Android console, and now we have another Kickstarter project to tell you about called the GCW-Zero. It’s an open-source handheld system which offers users the ability to play PC games, as well as a collection of retro console emulators as well.
It looks like the system is going to turn out to be a big success going forward. The unit looks fairly appealing from a design point of view, but the initial advertisement on Kickstarter as well as ongoing media coverage seems to have convinced a lot of consumers to buy into the project.
At the moment, the GCW-Zero team have managed to acquire $124,606 out of their original target of $130,000 with still 6 days to go until the project is officially funded. There are also additional items thrown in if the group target reaches up to $200,000, such as a MiniUSB to USB OTG adapter, Mini-HDMI cable and GCW carrying pouch.
Interested consumers can donate any amount they wish, but you’ll need to give at least $135 to guarantee that you’ll receive one of the first finished models. Again, there are other goodies on offer for those that are willing to give more, but with a total so far of 904 backers – it’s clear that there is a lot of promise in this.
This is largely due to the fact that it can play games such as Quake and emulators such as the SNES, Megadrive, PS1 and so on, right out of the box. The list of specs are written on the Kickstarter website and include specs such as an Ingenic JZ4770 1 GHz MIPS processor, and a Vivante GC860 GPU.
Since the project began, the team have already decided to upgrade the RAM to 512MB DDR2 and the internal memory to 16GB, which is pleasing. Check out a video below to get a better idea of how the handheld system looks and plays.
