Speculation has been growing in recent weeks about the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III, which will be the direct replacement to the current model. It is now known the device will not be making an appearance at this year’s MWC event, and instead Samsung will be using a separate special event to showcase the handset. Today we have news that the Galaxy S3 release is rumored to bring the thinnest model yet.
It is being claimed by sources that the next Galaxy S smartphone will only be 7mm thick, and according to SlashGear could also be available as early as May this year. This is a similar timeframe that was rumored before and could possibly put the S3 up against the iPhone 5. The Galaxy S3 is said to be putting all of Samsungs manufacturing expertise to test.
The current model is only 8.49mm thick and going even slimmer will raise concerns about fragility and battery life. It is being claimed that Samsung decided in March of last year to use components slimed down by 10 to 20%, which includes a slimmed down PCB. An eight megapixel camera is rumored with a 2 megapixel shooter on the front.
It is thought to support full 1080p video capture with playback coming via HDMI. Just like many of Samsung’s handsets it will use a MHL compliant microUSB input, and will also have 4G LTE technology built-in. Other features thought to be on offer include NFC capability and a Super AMOLED Plus display.
If the handset is only 7mm thick you have to wonder how long the battery will last, and makes you wonder if we may see something similar to the Droid RAZR MAXX released as well. Do you think a 7mm handset is too thin?
