Find My iPhone Without Paid MobileMe

It’s been over a year now since the Find My iPhone service was first introduced to us at the WWDC 2009 event and at that time, it was only available to those who had a paid subscription to MobileMe. However, we have some brilliant news now, as that no longer appears to be the case.

According to a recent article over at by Bob Bhatnagar, Apple is now offering the Find my iPhone service for free, but only to iPhone 4 owners who have installed the latest iOS 4.2 update. Once set up, the service can locate and even send a message to your lost handset.

The service can also erase or remotely lock your iPhone. It now means that you no longer need a paid MobileMe subscription with Apple to access the Find My iPhone service. Setting the service up is fairly simple to do as well, and the instructions can be found via

If you then lose your iPhone and want to find it, you can locate it by using the portal at All you have to do is log in using your Apple ID, which then enables you to find your iPhone on the map, play a sound, display a message on the handset’s screen, or even wipe all its data.
