We told you that an update for Final Fantasy Versus XIII was coming soon, and now we’re pleased to say Square-Enix has delivered with some new information on the game which you’ll definitely be interested in hearing.
In a recent interview with Japanese publication Famitsu, Tetsuya Nomura, the director for the game revealed a few more tidbits of information on the game, but the biggest insight in our eyes, is the fact that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will feature player-controller cutscenes, which is obviously pretty self-explanatory, as detailed over at Final Fantasy Union.
To break this down into something you can visualize, cutscenes featured in the game will be similar to real-time events, except that gameplay won’t stop during a cutscene, so you’ll still be able to interact whilst being treated to stunning graphics which gamers have become accustomed to seeing with the franchise.
The very idea of player-controlled cutscenes is a huge shakeup though, as it hasn’t really been experimented with before in Final Fantasy. The franchise has been praised and also criticized by its lengthy cutscenes, so with Square-Enix exploring this new style of gameplay, it can only reap rewards for those hoping that Final Fantasy Versus XIII proceeds in a new direction compared to previous titles such as Final Fantasy XIII which had its fair share of critics.
The interview in Famitsu also revealed that FFVXIII will feature a brand new lighting system, which you probably already have seen evidence of in screenshots for the game which look significantly different to the traditional style of gameplay seen in previous Final Fantasy titles. Versus XIII is obviously going down the ‘darker’ route, and we’re right behind Square-Enix on this – we just hope they deliver after countless delays and a lack of solid information for the game.
Another interesting relevation about the game, is that Nomura stated that players will be able to shoot photos of the game using the cell phone of main character Noctis, at any moment in the game at the player’s discretion. We imagine that Versus XIII will feature some beautiful landscapes, so the possibility of being able to snap a quick picture, and then upload it to say Twitter or Facebook is a very exciting prospect for sure, one which we can’t wait to try out personally.
The updates are coming slowly but surely it seems, but we’re loving the latest details on the game this time around. Player-driven cutscenes may be a feature that stays with the franchise in future titles, so we hope Versus sets a good benchmark. If you are planning to get the game, give us your insight into this. Do you welcome the idea?
