If you are a Final Fantasy fan, you are probably eager to find out if there are any updates for the Square-Enix’ Final Fantasy Versus XIII project, the one game that has the ability to save the franchise from ‘going downhill further’ so to speak.
While the company are naturally focused on Final Fantasy XIII-2, the sequel to FFXIII, fans are more interested in hearing fresh details for Versus XIII and it was a huge disappointment that we didn’t get any new information on the game at E3.
However, fresh news may not be too far off as it has been revealed that Final Fantasy Versus XIII director and character designer Tetsuya Nomura has claimed that an update on the title will be coming soon, although whether this is reference to an upcoming reveal at the Tokyo Game Show, or something coming sooner, remains to be seen.
Obviously we’re hoping that it’s the latter as gamers would love an initial update on the game, before Square-Enix unleash proper details at TGS 2011 later on in September. Given their previous track record though, we have a feeling that the latest we’ll see the game will be at the Tokyo Game Show, unless details are leaked prior to the event of course.
With an upcoming reveal on the game in mind, we would like to ask you the simple question: Is the excitement still there for FFVXIII? We say this because the franchise has seemingly been in decline since Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XIII didn’t exactly win over the doubters who were worried that the franchise was in trouble.
Square-Enix are promising that FFXIII-2 will offer a more ‘player-driven’ approach to the game, rather than the linear style seen in FFXIII, so it will be interesting to see what direction Square-Enix will take Versus in. The company has often been criticized for not listening to the community enough, and considering the fact that Versus XIII has been delayed for an entirety already it seems, you feel that the game is the last chance saloon for SE to rescue the franchise.
What are your thoughts on this? Are you still eager for Final Fantasy Versus XIII ever since its initial announcement some SIX years ago, or do you feel that the excitement has gone completely and you’re more interested in picking up other games? As a hardcore fan of the series, it feels like Square-Enix has a huge weight of expectation on their shoulders to deliver with Final Fantasy Versus XIII – let’s hope they can pull it off.
