FIFA 14 TOTY fans imply Barcelona favoritism conspiracy

Since the FIFA 14 TOTY was announced earlier this week there has been some debate among fans about the choices made. A number of people are unhappy about some of the players included in this year’s team, implying a Barcelona favoritism conspiracy.

There is no doubting that all of the players selected are world class and half walk into the team, the problem is that more deserving players should have been given a slot in the side. A lot of fans have been angry about the presence of Barcelona players Xavi, Iniesta and Dani Alves, it seems like FIFA has a soft spot for these players and Barca as a whole.

Seeing as this is team of the year, there is no justification for including this trio in the team, they are selected based on their past glories. Bayern Munich won the treble last year and annihilated Barcelona with an aggregate Champions League semi final score of 7-0 on their way to winning the European Cup. The fact that the Barca presence in TOTY is still so strong after being embarrassed is pretty farcical in our opinion.

The general feeling with fans on the Reddit forum is that players in the Bayern side like Bastien Schweinsteiger, Arjen Robben and David Alaba would be far more deserving. There has also been anger at the non inclusion of several Premier League players, Luis Suarez displayed incredible form in 2013 and missed out to Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is arguably just as good but is playing in a much weaker league.

Yaya Toure, Robin van Persie and Eden Hazard have also been touted as players who should have been included, although competition in the attacking roles is so overcrowded and competitive. Many people have forgotten that the world’s most expensive player, Gareth Bale even missed out on a place. Bourissia Dortmund who wowed crowds to the Champions League final did not see one single player in the TOTY.

What do you make of the selections from the FIFA 14 TOTY, do you think that there is an unfair preference for Barcelona players? Why not leave us your team of the year in the comments section below and see how it compares to other peoples and FIFA’s one?
