Some thought provoking comments made by Far Cry 3 writer Lucien Soulban gives us the impression we won’t be seeing a gay protagonist anytime soon in an AAA game mainly because of sales fears. The openly gay writer for Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon was asked about gay protagonists in triple-a games during a recent interview posted by Ubisoft.
He suggests that this may not happen for some time as it could amount in a negative impact on sales. The interview is highlighted on the Ubisoft blog site where Soulban discusses the possibility of a gay or lesbian AAA protagonist that doesn’t seem to be a joke.
The topic of Javier Bardem’s character in the James Bond film Skyfall was raised and how his sexuality is portrayed in the movie as a narcissist with mommy issues, and this included discussions about his performance being used as a benchmark for diversity in entertainment.
Risking the impact of sales seems to be the main issue here and this short interview Soulban feels that when they do decide to introduce a gay protagonist it will be done with serious intent and not played up for jokes. Discussing games like Mass Effect, Soulban feels that introducing gay characters has been done effortlessly in the past, although it seems this aspect is rarely announced for videogames.
In other relative news, we recently spoke about the Far Cry 4 location which could revolve around a Himalayas map. Apparently, a source close to the upcoming game has mentioned the possibility of Far Cry 4 being set near, in or around the location of the Himalayas. It seems the so-called source has been pretty reliable in the past, but we are still inclined to treat this as speculation until we hear something official.
Returning to the original story, would you like to see a gay or lesbian protagonist in the future? Or maybe you feel this doesn’t really have much relevance in gaming?
