Facebook users get hit with spam and explicit images

Social networking site Facebook are constantly changing the way users can set their privacy and security settings, which can lead to some users getting confused with these changes. Today though we have reports that Facebook users have been hit with spam and explicit images, which in light of recent reports of younger users on the site can be a bit worrying.

The Telegraph are reporting the site is looking into reports that many users received spam on their news feeds, which contained hardcore pornography and violent images in the last 24 hours. Currently it is not known what the cause of the material is, but before such content has found it’s way onto news feeds via viruses and hacking of users accounts.

Facebook said in a statement that protecting users from spam was their “top priority”, and said they are always looking to improve security and “and remove material that violates our terms. They also confirmed the site had received a jump in reports and were working on the problem.

Users have reported that the material has pornographic scenes that include celebrities such as Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus inserted digitally. There have also been reports of mutilated animals as well. Graham Cluley of Sophos said “it seems highly offensive spam content has successfully spread via Facebook for 24 hours or more”.

He added that this was the sort of issue that sees users leave the site and close their accounts. The site outlaws nudity, and the 800 million users often become the target of criminals trying to gain sensitive information. Did you have any of the material in your news feed?
