Facebook Bug: Was Your Account Deactivated?

A bug or error from the Facebook HQ caused thousands of Facebook accounts to be deactivated today, and in a strange and relatively annoying twist, the accounts seemed to be all female.

Now I’m going to take a wild guess here and say that Facebook are not sexist, but after a short amount of time a pattern emerged.

Twitter complaints progressed to voice their contempt and anger about their accounts being disabled for being “Inauthentic.” And soon enough, it was quite apparent that all affected were female members of the social networking website.

Upon realising their mistake, Facebook released a statement (to BGR) which read: –

Earlier today, we discovered a bug in a system designed to detect and disable likely fake accounts. The bug, which was live for a short period of time, caused a very small percentage of Facebook accounts to be mistakenly disabled. Upon discovering the bug, we immediately worked to resolve it. It’s now been fixed, and we’re in the process of reactivating and notifying the people who were affected.

But instead of Facebook backtracking, and immediately reactivating all that have been affected, they sent out so called “instructions” to get their account back up and running.

A reader from BGR posted the instructions Facebook gave her to reactivate her account. They can be read as follows: –

“Please upload a government-issued ID to this report and make sure that your full name, date of birth, and photo are clear. You should also black out any personal information that is not needed to verify your identity (e.g., social security number).
If you do not have access to a scanner, a digital image of your photo ID will be accepted as well. Rest assured that we will permanently delete your ID from our servers once we have used it to verify the authenticity of your account.”

The reader then left a comment underneath and said “I follow their terms of use, I do not have multiple accounts. Asking for a copy of my ID is just INSANE!”

I can understand her displeasure. Does Facebook ask your for valid ID when you sign up? No it does not. So why should you have to proove it to get your account back? There is already a Facebook group that existed before the bug called “Against Verifying Accounts With Mobile/ Credit Card/ Government Issued ID,” to which they have prooved the point they set out to make.

After all the hullabaloo, most of the accounts (that are legit) should get reactivated. It’s just not certain that the amount of people who have to ‘prove’ themselves to get back on are even going to bother after this.
