Excessive Vitamin D: FDA Explain Child Health Risk

There are a lot of products you can use to ensure that your child has sufficient vitamin D in their diet, however the FDA has recently warned that excessive vitamin D could pose a health risk.

Back in March a report was released which revealed that children who are breastfed are more likely to be vitamin D deficient, this resulted in many parents using vitamin D supplement products for their children, however you have to be careful.

The FDA warn that if you overdose your children with the liquid vitamin D supplement you could be harming your child, therefore you must ensure that your child gets no more than the recommended daily amount.

Vitamin D deficiency can result in your child developing incorrectly as it promotes strong bone development and calcium absorption in the gut. However too much of the vitamin can cause muscle weakness, kidney damage, abdominal pain and much more.

The FDA have recently issued it’s vitamin D supplement recommendations, they say that infants should have no more than 400 UI per day, also you should keep the supplement in it’s original packaging so instructions are at hand. Other things you must insure include using the dropper that came with the product making sure that it is marked with units of measurement.

Finally the FDA recommend you should always seek advice from a physician or pediatrician, they can advice you how much of the vitamin D supplement your child needs, if any.
