Evaluating Assassin’s Creed 3: Gold Edition value

A few weeks ago we informed you about a Limited Edition version of Assassin’s Creed 3, titled the Join or Die Edition. We thought that was the best version available along with the Freedom Edition, but now it has been confirmed that Ubisoft are planning to release something called the Gold Edition as well.

This Gold Edition is only going to apply to the very hardcore Assassin’s Creed fanatics. One thing that makes the Gold Edition different to the other versions though, is that this is exclusive to digital sales only – meaning no Gold Edition retail box.

On the plus side though, this package will be perfect for those who have a PS Vita and are intending to pick up Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberations as well. The Gold Edition includes a download for Liberation upon release, while you will also get a season pass from Ubisoft – enabling you to download ALL Assassin’s Creed 3 on the PS3.

The price for this handsome collection of content? – A mere £109.99 or around $170 when translated to USD. It may seem like an expensive investment at first, but when you think about it, it will probably save you money in the long run. An estimated three packs of DLC at $14.99 brings you to $45. Add to that $60 for Assassin’s Creed 3 and then another $50 for Liberation, you are looking at your $170 or near abouts. Bear in mind that we’re just using three DLC packs as a rough guideline – there could well be much more DLC planned for Assassin’s Creed 3 after release.

Aside from the price, the main question that you need to ask yourselves is whether you want a digital copy of Assassin’s Creed 3 and Liberations, as opposed to personal retail boxes. Many gamers including myself like to own physical copies of games no matter what, so this Gold Edition may be irrelevant to you.

Ubisoft has yet to announce this officially, but the key area for us will be the amount of DLC that they plan to bring as part of the season pass. Until they release that crucial bit of information, people may not buy into this yet. Let us know if this digital package appeals to you or not.
