If you consider yourself to be an Elder Scrolls fanatic and don’t happen to own an Xbox 360, there is no doubt that you are feeling slightly aggrieved at the moment due to Bethesda’s somewhat ‘surprising’ decision to award Microsoft with timed-exclusive DLC content for the upcoming Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim game.
If you are not aware of the news yet, it has been confirmed that Xbox 360 owners of Skyrim will receive the first two DLC packs for Skyrim before anyone else, this will last for 30 days before PC and PS3 owners receive it in the respective Steam and PlayStation Store marketplaces.
The important factors to note here though, is that this DLC agreement between Microsoft and Bethesda only applies for the first two packs, so future packs after that should release simultaneously on all three platforms – we hope. At the moment, details of what the exclusive DLC actually is are unknown yet, as it may just turn out to be something minor such as horse armor, or it could turn out to be something huge like an equivalent of the Wizard’s Tower from Oblivion for example.
Regardless of what the content is though, we have a feeling that PC gamers are going to be the most frustrated with the move. After all, it is the PC community that first put the hours into games like Morrowind and Oblivion, and in turn put the Elder Scrolls series on the map, so the fact that Bethesda has taken the money from Microsoft in favor of rewarding their most loyal fan base is hardly going to cast the company in a good light.
Then of course we have the never-ending PS3 Vs Xbox 360 exclusivity war, and perhaps Xbox 360 owners will be feeling that this is payback time for PS3 gamers who previously enjoyed a PS3-favored Mortal Kombat game with extra character Kratos so it’s basically a case of swings and roundabouts here.
If you are a PC gamer and have previously played older gamers in the Elder Scrolls series, give us your thoughts on Bethesda’s decision to think with their bank balance first – do you feel hard done by over this or has the news been blown out of proportion in your opinion?
