By now most gamers will have picked up their copy of EA’s latest title, FIFA 12. This is what the latest UK games chart has suggested anyway, as the company celebrates record breaking sales for the game since it released on Friday. The sales of this year’s game also represent an increase over FIFA 11’s sales last year.
It was not a shock when the game went straight in at number one in the charts. It even managed second place as well as first for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions in the individual platforms chart. In the multi-platform chart it has become the third biggest selling game from launch in the UK ever, only behind Call of Duty titles; Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2.
Metro reveals that as expected sales of the Xbox 360 versions exceeded those of the PS3 with 54% being sold on Microsoft’s console and 44% on Sony’s. All other formats accounted for the missing 2%. In terms of copies sold, the overall sales were up 18% and revenues generated were up 34%. This thought to be largely because of the new RRP of £54.99 not to mention the special editions which are usually priced higher.
One game that tried to be brave and release at the same time was X-Men: Destiny. Some may call it foolish but the game was released anyway and only managed number 18 in the chart. Some may have put it down to a lack of publicity for the game, either way a lesson will have been learnt here. With new releases due out next week, Dark Souls and RAGE it will be interesting to see where they will stand in the chart. It obvious that neither will be taking the top spot from FIFA 12 but Gears of War 3may find it drops down the pecking order as it will be trying to hold on to the number two spot.
Were you surprised to see FIFA 12 hit the charts at number one? How do you think new games, RAGE and Dark Souls will do next week?
