HMRC website login not working

The HMRC website for online tax login is one of the most important websites for those who are self employed who need to constantly check their financial situation on a daily basis.

At times though, the HMRC website can suffer problems meaning that you won’t be able to login in to check your account.

When that happens, you can use this page to tell us when the HMRC website is not working in your area or check the HMRC website status with other Self Assessment users.

    The NEXT button on the employment allowance (to say we are not eligible to claim) is taking me to a blank page. I cannot move forward in paying employees until this action has taken place. This has been happening since the 7th April. Can anyone help?

    The problem is that it restricts you to only 3 options , namely UK passport, Payslip and credit references. I have credit references only.

    Must be a problem at their end, but it would be nice if they would let us know, instead of wasting our time with repeated futile attempts.

    Can log onto HMRC but can then not get into the VAT and check payments etc. very frustrating as I need to register to set up vat deferments payment plan which is only open till 18th March, I think.

    I have exactly the same problem. Spoke to HMRC and they say Safari fault. Try Chrome instead. I downloaded Chrome App instead. Exactly same problems with that too.

    Hey guys so signing up and logging in through the gov.uk verify method and not through government gateway is the only way I’ve found that actually lets you access your account and fill out your return. Takes a little while to sign up and get verified but at least you can actually log in and kiss the “bad requests” goodbye. G’luck!

    Could you please clear cookies and caches and try again.

    If you continue to experience the same problem, to enable us to investigate further, please could you provide a more detailed description of what you were trying to do and the problems you are experiencing. Please can you send :-

    screenshots of each page of your journey, from the login page, up to and including the page where you cannot go any further (start to end)
    Your reference number or national insurance number

    These screenshots should include any error messages you are receiving and should include the URL’s.

    Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience caused.

    I’ve tried to log in my account a few times over the last 3 days and when I get to the point that I consent to an agency verify my identity the next page says BAD REQUEST check if you entered the website address correctly 🙁

    trying to login but it keeps saying code sent to app. when you try to open the app it asks you to login with the code they sent to the app – a perpetul loop that prevents you from logging in. Now will have to ear-mark the entire day trying to speak to someone at HMRC. Total nightmare.

    I have been *trying* to fill in my self assessment form online. I was away from my tablet for a bit and it logged me out. When I try to get back in, I get passed the government gateway part then it says we’ve sent you an access code to your mobile, but it’s not arriving. So I can’t get in again until I get a code. It’s been 10 minutes. By the way is there a way of not having to enter an access code EVERY time you log in?

Logged 3 times with ‘page not working’ and spoke to tech support – cannot help. Keep getting generic ‘we’re looking into it and someone (robot?) will get back.     Just spent the morning trying to connect to Self Assessment. Absolute murder, even worse than last year. I can log in using my gateway credentials but after answering a couple of questions, it says I have to log out and log in using a different ID. I don’t have one! Also, after logging out, I get a “page can’t be found” message. WTF!

    I am trying to log into HMRC Self Assesment. I input the user and password, it acceptss it and take me to tthe p[age saying “we have sent a code to your phone.
    I get the code and enter it in the box, it then takes me to another page asking me to set up an alternative way of getting the code. I select Voice on my landline. They call me within 5 seconds with the code. I enter this into the code box , press enter and it takes me back to the sign in page, I enter my login details and the whole circular routine begins again, there is no way out of this
    HMRC Screws up again, fix the Bloody thing and stop making changes all the time. GET IT RIGHT and LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!

    My Payroll software just informed me that the HMRC recently changed the RTI web address, both operated for a while but the old one has just expired.
    So unless your RTI software has been updated with the new site address it will have stopped uploading this week

    After one PAYE FPS this morning at 9:35 am, my other FPS’s are failing and the message is: Submission failed. Response was ” The remote server returned an error: (502) Bad Gateway.

        That night I tried again and all my clients FPS went through as normal.
        However I also discovered that the HMRC have changed the paye rti web address a month ago, and the old one has just expired.
        So unless your paye software has been updated with the new site address it will have stopped uploading this week

    I can’t log in on windows desktop. It says it’s sent an access code to my mobile phone but it hasn’t. I’ve tried a dozen times. I only have tonight to file my tax return. It usually takes under an hour, but so far I have spent nearly that just trying to login. I understand they’re busy but it needs to be working for those tens of thousands of people who need to complete their self-assessment before Wednesday. Starting to panic.

    Users ought to be advised at log-in of any problems with HMRC’s service.
    I got as far as pressing the ‘submit’ button, which prevented me from going back and saving a draft of a VAT return.

    I have been trying since last Wednesday 17th January 2018 to get online to do my self- assesment
    I have been doing it for years on line without a problem. I log in get a an access code then it starts asking security questions then it say I have tried too many times to prove my identity and locks me out for 24 hours, today was the third time I have phoned tax office and they cannot give me any explanation for what is happening. They say they can see I am logged in. this a nightmare. I only need to submit a short form I am a pensioner and my only income is my State pension and I am within my Tax free allowance so will not owe any thing.

    I am very worried and do not know what to do, I cannot afford a £100 penalty for late payment.
    I have cleared all history with cookie, caches etc. Even tried a different browser. It is too late to do a paper return so what on Earth do I do?

    Same here. My login details were saved on the site against my better judgement. Site instructed me to reset them when they were rejected, which I did but my new login details are now being rejected as invalid. Which is great as we have a deadline of the 31st.

    I managed to do my tax return Tuesday, I cleared my history and cache and hey presto my tax return was submitted. It worked for me give it a try you may be lucky.

    Tried since November to file a tax return. Cannot get past verify says I am not veryfied and that I have tried too many times to confirm identity. Have had an e-mail from the veryfiying company to say all checks ok and can go ahead with the login. When on chat the system went down

    Couldn’t access the system this morning to finish my self assessment return, finally managed to get to the page “complete tax return” to be taken to another window advising of “System Error – sorry the system is unavailable, please try again later or contact the HM Revenue & Customs Online Services Helpdesk” – Helpdesk not open till Monday now. This is terrible and frustrating especially when HMRC did not advise this on their service page earlier today. It now shows : Service availability status as “We are sorry the service is currently unavailable. We are working with our IT partners to provide an urgent fix for the problem and apologise for any inconvenience caused”

      Exactly the same issue here, first time having to fill in a self assessment so was beginning to panic thinking I was doing something wrong. Managed to get onto the old site once several attempts but then the next link I clicked I was greeted with the same error message I got previously and was returned to the new site.

      Same here. Some chat on Twitter says it has had problems all week. Not uncommon at this time of year when everyone comes back to work and discovers all their systems have crashed. Bit lame for HMRC, but then everything in Britain is absolutely rubbish these days.

    Yup, problems here too. I couldn’t log on so generated a new password but that wasn’t accepted. I tried again and that password too was not accepted. I tried a third time using a newly generated password and again experienced the same problem. I also tried using a different browser (Chrome first then Firefox) I’m now giving up and will try again later. I don’t see any value in trying to contact HMRC by phone based on the shambolic service they provide.

    Problem for the last three days in Cheshire trying to check on payment due by end of January. No access code being phoned through. Even went through security check (passport number etc..) – still no access code to access account. This may be due to the appalling record of HMRC both online and on phone enquiries. Surely no one would want to suggest these delays are a means to delay tax receipts, thereby picking up extra dosh by way of fines.

    I rang HMRC last week about this same problem and all they could tell me was that I was signed in with my correct Log in details and UTR number. No advice as to why I could not go any further to fill in my online accounts?
    I did as advised on this thread i.e. Google Chrome menu, select ‘More Tools’, select ‘Clear browsing data’, select from the dropdown ‘Clear the following items from’, select ‘Clear browsing data’. Bingo – this works! Why can’t HMRC advise or sort this out as it clearly puts us all in a panic mode. I have spent hours trying to find any fault on my computer.

Don’t bother… I filled it all in, gave a ‘Very Bad’ rating… explained the problems in the Comments box… clicked ‘SEND’ and HEY PRESTO guess what?… ‘SORRY WE’RE EXPERIENCING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES’ comes up! Now ask yourself why should a simple Site recording reviews from the public also be experiencing technical difficulties? Would it be cynical to suggest that it smacks of a rather unsubtle endeavour to avoid HMRC’s Annual Statistics revealing just how bad their service has been over the year.. ?

    Re your dads VAT return Jaki – dont worry too much. If you dont get it in on time then you are allowed one that is late. They just send a letter saying that you mustnt do it again. If you go onto HMRC’s Twitter site you will see that its an overall problem.
    The worry is that this proves how useless HMRC’s systems are … how will they cope with Makng Tax Digital when you have to submit 5 tax returns a year?

    Is anyone else having issues with HMRC’s online ATED CGT or NR CGT returns?

    Cannot even get on to the site. Just get the above message ‘sorry we’re experiencing technical difficulties, try again in a few minutes’. Well, have been trying for four hours. Have so much I need to do. These clowns are having a laugh with ‘Making Tax Digital’.

    keep getting this error at the last point of submitting mine, after the re-login part.

    Yes, I have tried to submit several times- go through the whole user ID p-word malarkey and keep getting an error message.

    I managed to get all the way to the submit bit but then it just keeps saying there’s a problem try again! What a time to mess about with the website!!!

    i cant complete my tax return online, i click on “complete return” and nothing it just goes to a white page with some error 403

    getting 404 error as well here, pretty shoddy once against from uk’s most hated company.
