Doubtful: iPhone 5 prototype leaked for release date strategy

Apple has scored big over the last few years with the iPhone but 2011 is something very different, there are a lot more than four handsets to take on the iPhone 5 release but just a few will stand a chance to match up to the large Apple following. The amount of Apple rumors leaking each week are growing as we near a release date, and these range from the idea of a larger screen to an iPhone 5 prototype being lost again, crazy considering the problems last year and police involvement.

Over the last week its been reported that an iPhone 5 prototype was lost, and some of the details leaked online, which led to these guys posting a few claims, and then an article on SF Weekly quickly claimed that the San Francisco police had no record of working with Apple personnel. Shortly after this article was posted we noticed an update correcting this claim, which has now disappeared.

So has Apple lost another iPhone prototype or not? This seems a mystery, but Cnet are confident in their claim that Apple has lost the apparent iPhone 5 “in a bar” again. What do you make of the above rumors?

Some Apple followers feel like this could be another big marketing strategy to build hype before the iPhone 5 release date, this is unlikely considering that police could be involved, or if SFW are correct, then the increased hype has been created just as someone might have planned.

The full truth will never be known about Apple’s marketing practices and no matter what they may be, Apple win. The leak could give advantages to Apple’s competition if given enough time and details, although with the possibility of police and Apple security being on the case extremely fast over any leak, we only see a benefit to Apple with every leak including an iPhone 5 prototype. The hype will build over the coming days to an apparent release within the next month, and leaks only help Apple create sales.

We’re doubtful there is a marketing strategy in this story, although with millions at stake who knows? Share your views.
