Does Sony PS3 price drop mean PS4 incoming? Sony CEO Say’s no

A few days ago at the GamesCom event, Sony announced a global price cut for the PlayStation 3 that was effective immediately. While the news was welcomed by many consumers, some have wondered if the Sony PS3 price drop means the PS4 is incoming. The Sony CEO Say’s no it doesn’t.

The speculation on the next generation of consoles has been growing ever since Nintendo announced their new Wii U console for next year. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have been around for a good few years now, with some quarters suggesting they have been pushed as far as they can go by developers.

Then with this latest price drop has lead to many to wonder if Sony were readying itself for the next version of the PlayStation console. Sony has done this sort of thing before as the PS2 saw a price drop before the PlayStation 3 was released. Then the original fat PS3 was dropped in price before the new slim version become available.

Nintendo has done something similar recently with the original Wii console ahead of the announcement of its replacement. CVG were recently talking to the new Sony Computer Entertainment CEO, Jim Ryan. The PS4 idea was put to him and he implied the next generation won’t be available anytime soon.

He said that he was focusing on “making the most of PS3”, and the fact the company now has more than fifty million PS2s in the “PAL territory”. He added that the PS3 was now up to twenty two million, “so there is a long way to go that’s all we need to focus on for now.”

Now you could speculate he wouldn’t say a new console is coming soon if the company is trying to shift high numbers of the PS3, but it makes sense in a way as Sony will be trying to make the Vita a success in the coming months.

Although a handheld device Sony wouldn’t want the spotlight taken off the Vita with the announcement of a PlayStation 4. There are many owners of both the Xbox 360 and PS3 who don’t want either company to bring out replacements just yet. It’s not just about the issue with money, but the fact both of the current consoles still have plenty of life in them yet.

Do you think Sony have dropped the price of the PS3 in readiness for its replacement?
