We never really wanted to report too much yesterday, seeing as though many of the reports we saw were to do with April Fools, and so we never got a chance to tell you it was the start of Distracted Driving Awareness month. This event was started because people do not realize just how dangerous it can still be to drive while using a hands-free kit.
I personally tend not to use one at all, choosing to let a passenger answer my phone, or pulling over at the first opportunity I get to call the person back.
You will be surprised at just how many people are still unaware of the dangers of answering a phone using a hands-free system. Ok, so we know that you can still keep both hands on the steering wheel, but studies show that people will still be distracted while having a phone conversation.
This can lead to several things, such as not paying attention to the lights when they change, not stopping at signs and even not seeing pedestrians, or other road users, which could then lead to an accident, and in some cases, fatal.
The Distracted Driving Awareness month has already kicked off socially, and you can already see it has gained a huge reaction on the NHTSA Twitter page. You could also visit the official website, as it has a great deal of information, such as fact sheets and more.
How will you be promoting this month long safety campaign?
