Diablo 3 Xbox One 1080p ordered by Microsoft

Diablo 3 Ultimate Evil Edition is now available to buy for both PS4 and Xbox One. It has been a long time coming but this week it’s really good news for Xbox One owners. Diablo 3 Xbox One is now 1080p after a day-one patch, but only after Blizzard received orders from Microsoft.

A revealing interview tells the story on how if it was up to Blizzard, Diablo 3 on Xbox One would have been 900p resolution. This is evident in the fact that the game was finished in this state and only with the day-one update, can Diablo 3 on Xbox One be boosted up to 1080p.

Blizzard’s John Hight, the production director has told Eurogamer that Microsoft effectively ordered them to boost the game to 1080p, as Microsoft didn’t want the PS4 version to be running at a higher resolution – as we’ve seen with many other multi-platform games released so far.

Here is what he is quoted as saying:

“We did find it challenging early on to get it to 1080p. That’s why we made the decision to drop to 900. That’s what we demoed and were showing around E3 time. And Microsoft was just like, ‘This is unacceptable. You need to figure out a way to get a better resolution.’ So we worked with them directly, they gave us a code update to let us get to full 1080p.”

As a result, Blizzard followed Microsoft’s instructions and were able to figure out a way of getting 1080p on Xbox One without negatively impacting the game – so a happy ending after all?

It’s interesting that if Microsoft hadn’t of pushed Blizzard, we would have had the same 1080p Vs 900p resolution war that we’ve seen in the past, Microsoft wants to avoid these type of stories where possible.

What do you make of this with Microsoft calling it ‘unacceptable’ to deliver a game that isn’t the same resolution as PS4? Do you think that other developers will be under pressure in the future to follow on – COD Advanced Warfare for example?
