While Nintendo see sales of its 3DS console struggle which has led to an upcoming price cut, Sony will be hoping that there will still be a market for its PSP replacement the Vita. There are some details that we already know about the device including the fact it will be powerful and have Wi-Fi and 3G support. Now developers reveal some details of the PlayStation Vita, including release time frame.
At present many things about the console are unknown including the way it will affect the way gamers play. But the guys over at CVG.com have been doing some digging and asking industry developers, retailers, analysts, and publishers about the device.
Many of those who were contacted couldn’t discuss details of the device as they were signed up to a non-disclosure agreement, but some nice information was gained. It is already known the Vita is going to be a powerful console, and pricing is likely to be around £280 for the Wi-Fi and 3G version. The Wi-Fi only model is thought to be priced at £230.
Obviously if you opt for the 3G version you will then need to sign up to a data plan, with consumers in the US having to stick with AT&T for this. Even though it has 3G support it may not mean you can switch off your PS3 and continue playing the likes of FIFA 12 or MW3 while on the move. The most likely scenario is support for PSN titles.
CEO of developer trade body TIGA Dr Richard Wilson does think the Vita has the potential of gaming on the move, but thinks that full support for launch titles is unlikely. The console will offer support for web browsing and even Skype calls as well as downloading smaller games.
One thing is certain the graphics on the console will be able to match those of home current home consoles. Director of PR for Imagination Technologies, David Harold said that developers have been “blown away” by the console. This is mainly down to POWERVR which is different from traditional graphics renderers.
This will allow for high performance but not at the cost of battery life, with the Vita to have similar life to that of the PSP. Release wise Sony has promised the console to arrive this year, but this could just be for Japan. We could then see a staggered release elsewhere beginning early 2012, with all areas to have the unit by March 31st at the latest.
Many people think Sony have learnt from its experiences with the PSP, which may not have been as successful as the original Nintendo DS it still did pretty well. Sony will be keeping a close eye on the troubles affecting the 3DS, and luckily the Vita will offer gamers a totally different gaming experience.

Update IGN.com have managed to get hold of a flyer from Blockbuster UK showing a release date of October 28th for the PlayStation Vita. If true it would make more sense to get the console out before the busy holiday season.
