Much has been written about the struggle that Nokia has experienced as it tries to make more of an impact in the smartphone market. Luckily the company still has a lot of fans in the feature phone market as it now looks to its Windows Phone devices to give the company a boost. But could HTC be going the same way as Nokia in the smartphone world?
The company’s shares recently took a dive after they announced that it doesn’t expect to grow in the current quarter. The company has seen itself overtaken in the Android market by Samsung, and even fall behind Nokia with the Windows Phone platform. Electric Pig is wondering what the company has to do to stop from following the route that Nokia has taken in recent years.
It is wondered if the company’s devices don’t compare to some or its rival’s offerings, and the custom HTC Sense UI has caused some Android update issues. During 2010 and the early part of this year the company were bringing out a new device in what seemed like every month. This has caused HTC some problems and they then had the issue surrounding the HTC Desire.
They first announced that the handset couldn’t handle the Gingerbread Android update, but then changed their minds after having lots of unhappy owners moaning. HTC Sense is good but isn’t really necessary considering how far the Android operating system has come recently. It also makes getting the Android update rolled out to devices a longer task.
It has to be remembered though a recent study into Android fragmentation found HTC to be one of the best manufacturers for updating hardware. But maybe the company needs to ditch Sense especially with handsets running Ice Cream Sandwich.
HTC have made some great handsets in recent years though, but maybe they need to release fewer handsets with better design. The HTC Legend and Radar are a couple of good handsets the company has released, but they are guilty of releasing many handsets that look identical.
Having used a couple of HTC handsets ourselves we have found them to be quite good and certainly better than older Nokia smartphones that have been released. What do you think are HTC going the same way as Nokia?
