Confusion over Droid Bionic 2, Windows Phone possibility

Nokia has been hanging in the balance for some time now, but with some backing from Microsoft things should start to turn around for who was once the powerhouse in the mobile phone industry. Not one to be left behind, Motorola is also looking at their options, and feels that they should not keep all their eggs in one basket. It is for this reason why they are considering an association with Windows Phone as well, which could mean that the Droid Bionic 2 could be running WP8 instead of Ice Cream or the Android version after that.

There seems to be some confusion over this though, as it is well known that the two companies have a number of patent issues with each other, but then so do so many other phone makers, and they seem to make nice when it suits them. It was Motorola’s CEO Sanjay Jha who made the shocking announcement while at the Oppenheimer Technology & Communications Conference, which was being held in Boston.

Jha said that he has to think about Motorola’s best interests, which means that he does not want to take all of their focus off Android and shift it entirely over to Windows Phone, but according to a recent report in The Inquirer, if he feels that it is the right thing to do then he will do it. This could certainly change a number of things in the mobile OS market, and could bring Microsoft right back into contention once again.

One has to ask themselves why Motorola would want to do such a thing, especially when you see how successful their alliance has been with Android? A few years ago the phone maker was facing a crisis, and it was not until they released the Droid range that ran Android that things turned around for them. The Droid Bionic is the latest model and is all set to hit the market very soon, the excitement has been building but can you see the same happening next year with its successor running WP8?

Having said that, there could be a few issues for the upcoming model, as it will launch with Gingerbread, while other Android handsets could launch with Ice Cream Sandwich. Could the Droid Bionic become Motorola’s HTC ThunderBolt, which is still waiting for Gingerbread all these months later?

Maybe it is time that the likes of Motorola could offer the same phone but running different mobile operating systems; OK, so we know that there is a lot of work involved, but all the consumer ever wants is choice?
