Clicking for iPhone iOS 4 Release Time

For those who have been living with their head in the sand, then you will be interested to know that today is the day that Apple releases its new iOS 4 for the iPhone and iPod Touch. As you would expect people have been connecting their current iPhones into iTunes and clicking on the update button — this is because no one is certain when the release time is.

A business colleague I know has been sitting in front of his computer all morning — I reckon he has hit update at least 200 times this morning. Some people say that you should just wait for iTunes to update your iPhone automatically — the one problem I have with that is my iTunes is not set to search for an OS update until June 24, it will be too late by then as my iPhone 4 should be here.

The Apple Forums is alive with all sorts of discussions on when the iOS4 will be available, there have even been suggestions that a select few has updated already — but we find this hard to believe.

This clicking the update button is not getting addictive, I must have pressed it ten times while writing this post. Sorry it is not my fault, I have backed up my iPhone 3GS — the button was just begging to be clicked.

For all those who are asking if this will be compatible for 2g or the 1st gen iPhone. The answer is — Sadly, No. It was announced during the Apple WWDC event that all of their support for the old 1g and 2g iPhones will be cut.

The iOS 4 will be available for 3G and 3GS without the multitasking feature and folder options. Only the iPhone 4 will have the complete goodness of the new OS, (and the next gen iPod Touch)

to add to this – it's a 378MB download.

I am downloading it now, taking about 30 minutes to download.

Between 5 and 6pm I have been led to understand. This being because of the substantial time difference between US and UK. 5pm here is 9am there.

Me to. I'm been testing the beta for awhile now. I too have been hitting that button over and over. I'm starting to think that they changed the compatibly for 2G ipod touch. But the beta worked. Can you help help.

I, too, have been clicking the update button. I was hoping that when I got up this morning it would be available. Sadly, not the case. This is frustrating, especially since there were several apps that released updates on Saturday specifically so that they'd be iOS 4 compatible. Such a tease!

I'm going to take a shot in the dark approch to this whole, "what time the update will be released" question and say between noon and 1pm EST. We need to give Mr. Jobs time to enjoy his Grande skinny latte, and pick out his favorite black turtleneck. (not sure if it's one or two words). It will be out when it's out. Until then I'll be checking in 20-30 minute intervals. Maybe someone should start a pool? 🙂
