BMW i3 electric with double usable range

BMW knew there were already price concerns with the i3 and i8 electric vehicles, and so have made a few changes in the hope of alleviating those concerns. However, these still come at a cost, so maybe BMW are just trying to squeeze every last cent out of consumers?

One of the biggest concerns has been with the BMW i3, as it was never going to be a vehicle you could take on long road trips. However, there are new BMW i3 extended range options, which would double its usable range.

While this might sound great, there is a catch, and that is the fact it will be a sort of hybrid vehicle instead. This is because BMW will augment the electric motor with a gasoline two-cylinder engine. However, how this set-up differs from other hybrids is the way the engine works, as it is solely used to top up the i3 batteries — so more of a generator than an engine.

The BMW i3 Extended range price is $3,950, which is more than we had been expecting, but should we really be surprised from BMW? The engine produces just 34 horsepower, but that is not important, it is making this small EV a more viable option for drivers that will be the bigger benefit.

We know the price is still an issue, just as it is for other electric vehicles. However, like the hybrid, prices will fall as sales begin to increase and so will battery technology. It is like all things when new, it takes time before we see the cost go down, just look how expensive 3D TVs were when they first launched, now look at them.

Thanks to BMW.
