Blue Buffalo Recall 2010: List of Products and Symptoms

It is not often that we see pet food recalls, but when we do we worry about our pets. The reason is because cats and dogs are unable to let us know if there is something wrong, so I am certain that the recent Blue Buffalo Company recall will have owners worried.

Looking at the list of recalls from the company we can see that there are 6 different products affected, three flavors of Blue Wilderness dry dog food, as well as Blue Basics Limited Ingredient Formula and Blue Life Protection Formula. More details on the different sizes can be found by visiting the FDA website.

The reason for this latest 2010 pet food recall is due to a high level of Vitamin D, which is much higher than guidelines recommend. There are a few symptoms to look out for, these include: depression, diarrhea, heart arrhythmias, increased urination, limping, pain in the joints, poor appetite and vomiting.

If you pet is showing any sings of these symptoms or has eaten the pet food then you should contact your veterinarian.

I started my Yorkie Puppy (at 12 weeks when I got him) on BB Lamb and oatmeal, switching him from Pedigree. After awhile he started to get bloody diarrhea so I switched him to Wellness 5. He is doing much better. My vet said it could have been protein over load and not necessarily BB's fault. He does fine as long as I also give him Wellness treats The BB treats also seem to make his tummy upset. Maybe it's not so much the food as it is the protein. I know people who get on Atkins sometimes have kidney… Read more »

before everyone freaks out, realize that many people will lie about a product online to try to ruin the company and get rid of competition for their own pet food company. Here is the FDA page that lists all pet food recalls. You can read the report yourself. 36 dogs got sick and all recovered so if there were deaths then they were not reported. It would seem odd to me that someone would come online to report a pet death and not report it to the FDA. A vet would certainly report it. So realize a lot of what… Read more »

Anyone have issues with the dry cat food? I put my 2 cats on BB a few months ago and they love it and seem to be doing fine. Now I'm concerned.

I had a healthy puppy until I purchased a bag of Blue Buffalo. I slowly transitioned her, and within a week she started having diarrhea, loss of energy, and no appetite. I kept her on the dog food for another six weeks thinking that the dog needed time to adjust to the food – BIG MISTAKE! Her symptoms worsened. I finally made the decision to switch her cold turkey to another dog food, and within 48 hours her symptoms improved. I would never recommend Blue Buffalo to anyone.

The heart breaking pet food recall in 2007 CONVINCED ME that pet food companies could give two sh**s about you and/or your pet. I'm so glad that I started to raw feed my kitties. Although I don't have any dogs BB is recommended for cats too. NEVER EVER EVER FEED DRY FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Dog recently became very ill and started to drink large amounts of water. she was very tired and not acting her usual "happy to go for a walk" self. She progressively got worse… I decided to take her to the Animal Hospital when she took a turn for the worse… As it turns out the dog food I was feeding her was BLUE BUFFALO and there was a recall on her exact food… all the symptoms matched and the ASPCA gave the vet the recommendations to save her life. My Vet also spoke with BLUE BUFFALO and they assured… Read more »

No notices posted in any pet specialty stores during recall period. This is horrible!

My dog just died. Purchased Blue Buffalo from Petco. No notice posted about the recall – if they had done so responsibly, I would have thrown it out! Diarrhea, staggering, excessive water consumption, heart failure. When he died, blood ran from his nostrils.

CAUTION! PURCHASING BLUE BUFFALO DOG FOOD MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES FOR YOUR DOG. I purchased a medium size bag of BLUE BUFFALO LIFE PROTECTION SENIOR FORMULA dog food on 10/20/10 and my dog had extreme bloody diarrhea by 10/27/10. Previous to this episode my dog had finished her first small bag of the weight control chicken & brown rice formula without incident. My vet in Irvine, CA reported seeing several dogs with similar symptoms that had recently purchased a new bag of blue buffalo dog food. Apparently my dog had the most severe reaction, with diarrhea lasting 2… Read more »
