Almost a year ago Research in Motion launched the BlackBerry Torch 9800, a few days ago RIM revealed three new smartphones which they hope will make an impact on the market, one of which was the follow-up to the 9800 which has been aptly called the Torch 9810.
Recently the guys over at CrackBerry got some hands-on time with the 9810 and it was obvious that despite having a similar form-factor the new device was head and shoulders better than the device which arrived a year ago, we have embedded a video at the end of this post which shows you why we think the 9810 puts the 9800 to shame.
RIM has stuck with the same sliding mechanism which is used to reveal the QWERTY keyboard, in terms of the keyboard’s layout it looks similar, if not identical as the original Torch 9800, which is not surprise as this keyboard was greatly received by most. On the rear of the new Torch 9810 there is an accented battery cover which has a metallic textured finish, this should give you extra grip which will come in handy when sliding out the keyboard.
As is explained in the video the new Torch has a much brighter display than its predecessor, this time round you get 253dpi which ensures that the display is crisp. A bright display is useless without decent speed, therefore it is nice to hear that ‘under the hood’ there is a 1.2GHz processor and 768MB of RAM, you also get 8GB of internal memory. To put this into context the 9800 featured a 624MHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory, so the 9810 is a massive improvement.
In terms of UI and software performance it is clear to see that RIM has been working hard on BlackBerry 7 and Liquid Graphics, general navigation is snappy and fluid, whilst apps open up instantaneously, we are sure that any one who has hands on time with the 9800 knows that it sometimes feels a little slow, therefore it is clear that the 9810 improves on a few of the 9810’s imperfections.
