Benchmark For MacBook Pro 2011, Hopes For Air Refresh

The latest benchmark results for the 2011 MacBook Pro have now started to come in, and we can clearly see that the new notebook is faster in some areas than others. This has certainly given us food for thought, and hopes for the MacBook Air refresh. Apple had said on the day that the updated Pro was released that it was much faster in almost every way, and it seems that they were correct.

We could bore you with all those results, but it would be far better for you to read the article over on MacWorld, where they have broken down the benchmark into five different speedmark graphs. Scores range anywhere from 13 to 53 percent, which cover the 13-inch, two 15-inch and one 17-inch model.

Most of that speed is due to the new processors and graphics, which Apple say are two and three times faster respectively. The CPU starts from the 2.3GHz Intel Core i5 in the 13-inch model up to the 2.7GHz i7 in the 17-inch version, which can be increased to 3.4GHz thanks to Turbo Boost. As we know games and other applications are now much more graphics intensive, which is why the new Pro comes with the Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor; this also allows the new FaceTime feature to run smoothly.

Now we do not know about you, but we have thought that the 2010 MacBook Air refresh was a bit of a cop out, yes there were a number of improvements — but where was the CPU upgrade that we have been waiting for? The Air has never been the fastest notebook on the planet — I know, I’m writing on one now – so is there hope this year?

Apple knows that rivals will be on their back to not only compete with the new MacBook Pro, but also the Air as well. You only have to look at the new Sony VAIO S Series, Lenovo ThinkPad T420, and the Samsung 9 Series, which will come in both 11 and 13-inch models.

Do you think that Apple will have to update the processor in the 2011 MacBook Air to stay relevant?
