Before iPad 2 debut, new patent – iPad 3 tech

We are still waiting for the iPad 2 debut however we have recently heard about a new patent has been filed by Apple and granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office which many suspect will be used for Apple’s 3rd generation iPad.

Full details regarding this tech can be found over at AppleInsider, to summarize Apple have a patent for “Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products”, from what we can see this is a cost-effective way to coat metal surfaces to make them scratch and blemish resistant.

The patent also mentions stainless steel, this metal is great for mobile devices because it is not magnetic and does not affect wireless technologies, one bad thing about stainless steel is that it is quite prone to scratching, this is where a nitride coating would come in.

According to AppleInsider a nitride coating will allow the metal underneath to show through, whereas titanium nitride has a gold color, therefore the two should not be confused with eachother, that said a gold coating would make for a nice limited edition iPad 3.

As usual Apple are keeping quiet about their future products, therefore we cannot 100% confirm that the new patent will be used with the iPad 3, but let’s face it the iPad 2 and iPhone 5 will not be using this tech if Apple plan to release them in the coming months as the patent has only just been granted.
