AT&T knows they need to do something to relieve its 3G data congestion and seems to have come up with a novel idea — offering free Wi-Fi in Times Square. AT&T customers who visit and live in The Big Apple will be able to make good use of new the Wi-Fi coverage zone on their laptops, netbooks, smartphones and other mobile Internet devices.
According to Thomas Ricker from Engadget, the mobile network carrier has installed its new free Wi-Fi service in the north part of Times Square, New York. By offering this large Wi-Fi hotspot, it is hoped that 3G data usage will be much lower, in turn making the network more reliable.
More than 32 million AT&T customers will be able to take advantage of this great offer, but only those who own a qualifying smartphone — such as the iPhone 3GS.
If this pilot location proves successful, then AT&T could roll out these free Wi-Fi hot zones in other key areas where demand for 3G data is high. Which area would you like to see this new service in?
